Ole Kirk Christiansen was a master carpenter in Billund, Jutlad, Denmark, who, after the Great Depression hurt his business badly, decided to go into wooden toy-making in 1932. In 1934 his company was named LEGO, after the Danish for "Play Well": Leg Godt. The company prided itself on making very high-quality wooden toys, its motto being Det Bedste Er Ikke For Godt, Only the Best is Good Enough. The company began to produce plastic toys in 1947 and in 1949 Godtfred Kirk Christiansen took over the business and introduced Automatic Binding Bricks, the anscestor to today's Stud-and-Tube Bricks, which came about 8 years later. The first system of play was now available, and the next year (1958) the patent for the system used today was granted. In the 1970's, the very popular system was made even more popular when Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen introduced a "system into the system", by making LEGO themed sets like Pirate, Space, and Castle. These and hundreds more have made the LEGO group one of the most successful toy companies ever. The toys stimulate children's individual imaginations and lead to the development of many useful and nessesary skills like dexterity, motor skills, and seeing how things work.
